What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format for
distributing and aggregating Web content (such as news headlines and some 'blogs').
RSS is a dedicated subset of XML (eXtended Markup Language), intended to make it
easy to share data and information.
There are several versions of RSS. Our feed
reader can handle all of them. Please note that not all RSS feeds are
recognizable by an .xml extension on the stream address, but they are almost
always indicated by the orange XML or RSS symbols on the providers websites. This application
(XMLNewsReader) can be referred to as RSS reader, feed reader, feed
aggregator or news reader.
What are the benefits and reasons for using RSS?
RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to
easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are
interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You
ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter. The
number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names
like Yahoo News. The advantage of a web based RSS reader like XMLNewsReader
is that you will be able to access your content from any computer.
Quite a few websites use RSS to display headlines from other websites, as it
provides additional content to their readers. For anyone that reads a half dozen
or more pages that have RSS feeds, an aggregator like XMLNewsReader is a
necessity. XMLNewsReader is set up to periodically check for new items in
the feeds you are subscibed to, every second. In other words, the news comes to
you, rather than you having to go to the news. This saves a tremendous amount of
time. Or conversely, you can read many more feeds in the same amount of time.
Many people read several hundred feeds. That just wouldn’t be feasible without
an RSS aggregator. Additionally, you avoid all the non-new information on a web
page, including the ads, images, menus, etc.
How do I get Started with RSS?
You will need to sign up for an account to use it. On your own account, you'll
be able to add XML FEEDS and edit the NEWS categories.
How to subscribe to a Feed
Just login and enter the URL of the RSS feed into your XMLNewsReader and
it will then read its RSS feed. Our tools support RSS auto-discovery (so you
don't have to copy and paste the RSS URL into your aggregator).
How do I find RSS content?
Go to BlogStreet’s RSS
Discovery tool and enter in a website. It will return the feed for you. If
there is a website that you visit regularly for news and information, check to
see if they have added the RSS/XML feature to their site. Look for these buttons:
XML
RSS
.
Try looking on the page’s menu (usually left side or right side) and the footer.
Most often RSS feeds are linked to with an small icon. The most common is an XML
icon
,
or other labels
(RSS, RSS2, XML, RDF, Atom), colour, and size varies.
These buttons let you know that the site does offer RSS feeds for its content.
Many news site give away FREE RSS FEEDS. To locate these feeds, go to any news
site and look for the XML or RSS logo. The logos contains the URL links. Copy
the URL and add it at www.xmlnewsreader.com and the system will feed the news
automatically and update news at regular intervals.
Note that not all XML icons link to RSS feeds. RSS files do not have a common
file extension, although they frequently end in one of
.xml,
.rss, or .rdf
(note that other extensions may be used also). If it isn’t labeled or
self-evident, just try reading the file in an aggregator like XMLNewsReader;
if it doesn’t work, it is probably not an RSS feed. If you still haven’t found
the RSS feed for a website or you want to write a feed for your site, please
contact us. You can “write” an RSS feed at www.xmlnewsreader.com.
How do I add the RSS content?
When you find content that you want to add to your reader you will need to
complete a few simple steps to add the website's link so that your reader will
alert you when new content is available. If you see the icon for your RSS
reader on a website you can click on the readers logo to add the content. You
will right click on the XML symbol and select "Copy". Then paste this shortcut
into your RSS reader. The RSS reader has directions on how to add feed URL.
If you accidentally left click on the XML symbol and see HTML coding do not
panic. From the screen with the XML code, you can also right click on the URL
address and select "Copy". You will then paste that URL into the area of your
RSS reader that allows you to add RSS content.
Login and click the "Add Feed" and it opens another window with a box where the
URL can be pasted and the content will be added to your account. The RSS reader
is automatically populated with your favorite sites and you will have one window
to check for regular updated content.
Do not be intimidated if this seems complicated. Using RSS is the most efficient
way to track new content on the web and stay current with the sites you like the
most.
